Graduado em Economia pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais - PUC Minas, com Especialização em Ciência Política pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais - UFMG. Possui vasta experiência na Administração Pública, onde atuou como: Governador do Estado de Minas Gerais, Ministro do Desenvolvimento, Indústria e Comércio Exterior do Brasil, Prefeito de Belo Horizonte, Vice-Prefeito de Belo Horizonte, Secretário Municipal de Governo, Planejamento e Coordenação Geral da Prefeitura Municipal de Belo Horizonte, Secretário Municipal de Fazenda da Prefeitura Municipal de Belo Horizonte, entre outros.
